DA calls for Minister Thembi Simelane to step aside amid serious allegations

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for Minister Thembi Simelane to step aside from her role as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, pending the outcome of the current investigation into revelations about her alleged involvement in a questionable loan transaction during her tenure as Mayor of Polokwane.

Despite whether Simelane has repaid the loan from Gundo Wealth Solutions or not, the fact remains that the money involved is tainted. The loan’s apparent exorbitant interest rate raises serious concerns, as it is highly questionable why the Minister chose to engage with an entity not registered as a financial service provider, Gundo Wealth Solutions, who in turn received the money from VBS bank. It’s unclear why the minister did not approach an ordinary commercial bank.

The DA asserts that Simelane’s current role as Minister places her in an untenable conflict of interest. As the head of the justice system, she oversees the institutions, like the NPA, who are tasked with leading the investigation in this matter and into the broader VBS matter. This situation undermines the independence of the Criminal Justice System, which is crucial for maintaining public trust.
