This victory is a win for every South African who has felt the pinch of high fuel prices. The government could simply not afford to continue turning a blind eye to the plight of consumers, at a time when many are struggling to put food on the table. – Kevin Mileham MP

Following a long, relentless, and sustained campaign by the DA for the rationalization of fuel prices, the Government of National Unity (GNU) through the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, has announced that a Fuel Price Intervention Plan will soon be tabled in Cabinet.

The plan is a significant step towards alleviating the financial burden that South Africans have been shouldering due to the ever-increasing cost of fuel.

It is expected to be anchored on “measures to tackle high fuel prices…[and] ensure that South Africans can afford the fuel and the ability to transport.” The announcement is in line with the DA’s long-standing concerns that high fuel prices are exacerbating the cost of living crisis in the country.

The soaring fuel costs have been driving up mobility costs for millions of South Africans who rely on transportation to get to work, school, and other essential activities.

The DA has been at the forefront of the fight against high fuel prices, consistently highlighting the devastating impact these prices have on ordinary citizens. The party’s campaign has included calls for the reduction of fuel levies, the removal of unnecessary regulatory costs, and a review of the fuel pricing structure. The DA has argued that these measures are essential to bringing down the cost of fuel and easing the financial strain on South African households.

This victory is a win for every South African who has felt the pinch of high fuel prices. The government could simply not afford to continue turning a blind eye to the plight of consumers, at a time when many are struggling to put food on the table.

As the DA eagerly awaits the details of the Fuel Price Intervention Plan, we will work to ensure that its proposals are consumer centric and deliver tangible relief to all South Africans. The DA remains committed to fighting for policies that improve the quality of life for all citizens, and this victory on fuel prices is a clear indication that the party’s efforts are making a tangible difference.

The DA will continue to champion for an affordable cost of living dispensation for all that is underpinned by sustained economic growth. Fuel price rationalisation is just one of the many battles the DA is fighting on behalf of South Africans and we will continue to use our presence in the GNU to ensure that every decision made prioritizes the financial well-being of consumers and reduces the cost of living for all.
