US Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris asserted Israel’s right to self defense while speaking during the final night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

While accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, Harris reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring Israel’s security. Referencing Hamas’s Oct. 7 slaughter of 1,200 people throughout southern Israel, Harris vowed that her administration would always furnish the Jewish state with the arms necessary to thwart future terrorist threats.

“And let me be clear: I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself. And I will always ensure that Israel has the ability to defend itself,” Harris said in Chicago. “Because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on Oct. 7, including unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.”

Harris also took a moment to reflect on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, lamenting the loss of innocent civilian life. Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group that runs Gaza, conducts operations within civilian infrastructure and has been widely condemned for using human shields to dramatically increase the number of civilian casualties in an effort to hurt Israel’s international support.

Harris said that she and US President Joe Biden are working to conclude the Israel-Hamas war with an elusive ceasefire. The Democratic nominee added that the end of the onflict would usher in a new era of “dignity, security, freedom, and self determination” for the Palestinian people.

“At the same time, what has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost. Desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking,” Harris said. “President Biden and I are working to end this war, such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self determination.”

Many pro-Israel observers were relieved to see Harris express support for the Jewish state’s right to self defense and self-determination.

Though Harris has repeatedly issued nominal support for Israel, she harbors close ties to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which has become increasingly hostile toward the Jewish state. Harris has been under pressure from pro-Palestinian activists to break with the Biden administration by adopting a more adversarial posture toward Israel.

Harris previously urged the White House to be more “sympathetic” toward Palestinians and take a “tougher” stance against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a Politico report in December. In March, White House aides forced Harris to tone down a speech that was too tough on Israel, according to NBC News.

Later, she did not rule out “consequences” for Israel if it launched a large-scale military offensive to root out Hamas battalions in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, citing humanitarian concerns for the civilian population.

Harris initially called for an “immediate ceasefire” before Biden and has often used more pointed language when discussing the war, Israel, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Harris has also expressed sympathy for anti-Israel protesters on US university campuses. In an interview published last month, Harris said that college students protesting Israel’s defensive military efforts against Hamas are “showing exactly what the human emotion should be.”

“There are things some of the protesters are saying that I absolutely reject, so I don’t mean to wholesale endorse their points,” she added. “But we have to navigate it. I understand the emotion behind it.”
