Monrovia, Liberia, June 24, 2024 – The Liberia Maritime Authority begins a two-day National Stakeholders Consultative Engagement Workshop today, June 24–25, 2024, following a one-day meeting with key stakeholders.

The workshop, organized in collaboration with the University College London (UCL), aims to strengthen Liberia’s negotiation capacity ahead of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) meeting on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships.

Speaking over the weekend in Monrovia, Liberia’s Representative to the IMO, Robert Kpadeh, said the partnership with the UCL, through the Leading Effective Afro-centric Participation (LEAP) Project, underscores a commitment to enhancing Liberia’s active participation in the IMO negotiations.

He explained that the LEAP Project will provide crucial support in formulating strategies and adopting mid-term measures to achieve the IMO’s vision of a net-zero emission shipping sectors by 2050.

He says this collaboration reflects a proactive approach to environmental stewardship and international maritime policy.

However, Mr. Kpadeh emphasized the critical role of the maritime industry in global GHG emissions and highlighted Liberia’s significant position as a flag state and its vested interest in promoting sustainable maritime practices. Editing by Jonathan Browne
