Margibi, Liberia, July 10, 2024—The Margibi County Police Detachment has transitioned to new leadership, inducting ACP Patrick Kormazu as the new chief of Police for the county.

The ceremony, which brought together former chief of police Augustine Harlie, Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency Margibi Commander Alex S. Flomo, the county attorney, and police officers from all over the county, was held at the Kakata Administrative Building on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Officials of the marketing association, representatives of the county legislative caucus, city council, and county administration, among other groups, were also in attendance.

In his turn overstatement, Mr. Augustine Harlie, who appreciated the people of Margibi for cooperating with him to keep the peace and security of the county during his stay in the county, said that though it has not been easy, in any undertaking, one must have challenges.

He added that he is aware that some of the officers may not be happy with his actions while he headed the LNP in the county, but his actions benefit the police in general.

He urged the police in Margibi to accord due courtesy and cooperation they afforded him to Mr. Patrick Kormazu, his successor, who he described as an easy-going person who takes his job seriously.

According to him, Mr. Kormazu will achieve what his (Augustine Harlie) administration did not succeed in doing through cooperation.

Mr. Harlie commented on the stubborn attitudes of drivers and marketers in Katata as one of his challenges, expressing optimism that his successor will continue where he left off.

He noted that though crimes cannot be eradicated, the crime rate in Margibi can be reduced with the help of the police force.

For his part, ACP Patrick Kormazu expressed delight at the confidence he has been placed in to serve the police in Margibi County.

He commended the inspector general of the Liberia National Police, Gregory Coleman, for entrusting him with a significant responsibility to which he is committed to upholding the values of integrity, transparency, professionalism, and respect for diversity that the law enforcement agency stands for.

Saluting the outgoing police commander, he recognized his diligent services to the people of Margibi and the police over the years.

He acknowledged the hard work of the police officers and junior supervisors daily, reminding them of their mission to serve the community by ensuring the safety and protection of all inhabitants.

He pledged his willingness to work with them to enhance their capability for fostering the rule of law.

The new police chief said they face many challenges in preventing crimes, maintaining public order, and responding to emergencies.

He also noted that the challenges can be overcome through collaboration, coordination, continuous training, and innovative strategies, and Margibi can become a safer place for everyone.

Kormazu stressed that community engagement is a cornerstone of responsible policing. Therefore, he is committed to strengthening his relationships with the community by working with local leaders, county authorities, and residents.

According to him, the root causes of crimes can be addressed to build a more resilient and cohesive society. Editing by Jonathan Browne
