As the Paralympic Games begin, USCRI is thrilled to highlight a historic milestone: the largest refugee team ever to compete in these Games.

The journey of these athletes is both inspiring and significant, as disabled refugees often face even greater challenges and remain largely invisible. According to the UNHCR, several million disabled refugees are displaced, frequently encountering additional barriers such as limited education, livelihood opportunities, and access to basic services. These eight athletes not only represent the 120 million refugees that are displaced worldwide but also the estimated 1.3 billion people—around 16 percent of the world’s population— that live with a disability, according to the World Health Organization.

In 2016, the inaugural refugee Paralympic team featured just two athletes. Now, at the 2024 Paris Games, the team has expanded to include eight Paralympians and one guide runner. Each member of this team has confronted their own unique difficulties, having fled their home countries due to conflict, persecution, and hardship. Their presence at the Games is a testament to their resilience and determination.

This expanded team not only highlights remarkable athletic talent but also represents over 120 million refugees worldwide. Their participation in the Paralympics serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and spirit of those who, despite facing immense adversity, continue to strive for excellence and inspire others.
